The Auburn Tigers may soon lose more than SEC games, which they've done the past two weekends against the Texas A&M Aggies and Oklahoma Sooners. Soon, they might lose their two most talented offensive weapons.
After Jackson Arnold mustered just 125 yards through the air and called his own number on the ground for the Tigers' one touchdown, against a Texas A&M defense that hadn't given up fewer than three touchdowns all season, Cam Coleman and Eric Singleton Jr.'s future with the program were called into question.
By a former Auburn receiver of all people.
Anthony Schwartz, who you can consider a major non-fan of the Hugh Freeze regime at this point, predicted Coleman and Singleton hitting the Transfer Portal this offseason.
"I’m cool on this team good luck to 8 and 1 on their next stops I will be rooting for y’all," Schwartz posted on X.
Evidence Schwartz isn't a fan of the Tigers? He believes DJ Durkin stepping in on an interim basis and hiring Lincoln Riley away from the USC Trojans should be the program's next moves.
"I’m cool with promoting Durkin but you throw the bag at Lincoln and see if he wants to compete, keep Coach Davis for the wideouts," Schwartz wrote.
Schwartz's former teammate, linebacker Chandler Wooten, also believes Auburn is set to lose some weapons this offseason.
"Yeah those 'weapons' we got gone in December btw," Wooten wrote.
Auburn should consider re-hiring Gus Malzahn
It's okay to admit you made a mistake sometimes. AU may have prematurely parted with Gus Malzahn, but the man still loves Auburn -- he still owns a lake house on Lake Martin and wished Bruce Pearl a happy retirement -- and will probably be looking for another head coaching job after finishing up his stint on Mike Norvell's Florida State Seminoles coaching staff as offensive coordinator.
To quote Jon Bon Jovi, who says you can't go home?
John Cohen certainly shouldn't if he finally fires Freeze. Re-hiring Malzahn will have many of his former players, now in the NFL, back fully supporting the program.
It may not be the most exciting hire to many Tiger fans, but perhaps he can craft a coaching staff, with an explosive and crafty offensive coordinator, that can restore the standard Auburn once had as a perennial eight-plus-win team.
