Auburn football upsetting Georgia in Athens a few weeks ago clearly awoke something in Kirby Smart and Glenn Schumann's defense. The Dawgs destroyed the Gators in the World's Largest Outdoor Cocktail Party in Atlanta, 27-8, and now OutKick's Trey Wallace believes the SEC and the rest of college football are screwed because of the Tigers' win in Week 7.
Wallace believes UGA made a statement against Florida to make up for its last appearance, a loss to a now-4-4 Tigers team, in a piece titled, "Good luck, SEC: Auburn awoke a monster in Athens, and Florida pays the price in Georgia's cocktail beatdown."
"Did Auburn do the unthinkable a few weeks ago by awakening a monster in Athens? Judging by what we witnessed against an overwhelmed Gators football team, it wasn’t hard to notice that Kirby Smart made sure to send a defensive message to those who were questioning whether the Dawgs had lost a step in recent weeks," Wallace wrote.
Georgia gave up just 252 yards of offense to the Gators, including just 54 yards on the ground, after Byrum Brown took the Dawgs to the cleaners a few weeks ago. Brown amassed 115 yards on the ground on 26 carries and scored a rushing touchdown against the Dawgs.
UGA looked like a team with something to prove after that uncharacteristic effort against a quarterback who has amassed 25 yards on the ground in 32 carries against Ole Miss and LSU since. Against the Rebels on Saturday in a 45-15 loss at Vaught-Hemingway Stadium, Brown had five yards on 13 carries.
Auburn, UGA both winners in Deep South's Oldest Rivalry this year
Nothing can take that win from the Tigers. As long as there isn't a meltdown against Arkansas and Mississippi State over the next two weekends, this will have been a successful debut season for first-year head coach Alex Golesh.
As for Georgia, the Dawgs got a great reset from that loss and the subsequent bye week. Smart's program had been stagnant for years, making the CFP field over the past two years but not making a deep run either time.
Maybe an embarrassing loss to a rival on its own field was exactly what the doctor ordered for UGA. If the Dawgs win the CFP national championship, few Auburn fans would complain.
Owning a road win over the national champions would be a great silver lining for the Tigers' 2026 season, after all, regardless of what else happens in November.
