Auburn fans are on high alert following the cancellation of the Georgia-Clemson home-and-home series.
The Tigers have major dates planned over the next four years against Notre Dame in 2027 and 2028 and Miami in 2029 and 2030.
The last thing Auburn fans need is to have the chance to travel to South Bend or Miami cancelled. There's just too much doom and gloom already after a poor defensive effort against Florida undermined the team's hopes this season.
Auburn must keep competitive schedule as other teams back down
Amidst all the losses of the past five years, one thing the Tigers could hold their heads high about is playing a competitive schedule every year.
Facing Penn State in 2021 and 2022 and Baylor in 2025 and 2026 was a major non-conference challenge. The Bears were supposed to offer more of a challenge with their recruiting landscape and NIL situation, but that's neither here nor there.
With the conference schedule shifting to nine games, Auburn kept Baylor on the schedule this year. After the Dawgs and Clemson Tigers backed out of their series, it's becoming a trend not to want to compete with the best of the best in early September.
Everyone wants to be Curt Cignetti and Indiana now
Everyone seemingly wants to be Indiana now.
The Hoosiers have played Western Kentucky, Howard, North Texas, Indiana State, Kennesaw State, Old Dominion, Charlotte, Western Illinois, and FIU since Curt Cignetti arrived in 2024. Cig is one of the richest coaches in the sport after playing that slate and winning the title in 2025/2026.
This isn't to downplay the Big Ten slate IU played in 2025, or the run through the CFP, which included Alabama, Oregon, and Miami. Still, Texas coach Steve Sarkisian has made great points about his Longhorns needing to shift to an easier schedule. Facing Ohio State helped cost UT the CFP in 2025.
Auburn has a strong traveling fanbase. Getting rid of reasons to travel to non-SEC towns and cities is a good way to choke even more life out of college football on the Plains.
Let's hope John Cohen doesn't go down that road.
