At a place like Auburn University, greatness isn’t hard to find. The standard has been built over decades by names like Bo Jackson, Charles Barkley, Frank Thomas and Cam Newton — athletes who didn’t just win, but left a lasting mark on their programs.
Now, Jackson Koivun is building a case to be mentioned alongside them.
The latest step came this past weekend, when Koivun captured his third consecutive SEC individual championship, becoming the first player to accomplish the feat in nearly six decades. It’s the kind of milestone that stands on its own, but for Koivun, it fits into a much larger pattern.
“It feels great any time you can come out here and win an SEC championship, it’s a huge honor,” Koivun said. “To be able to do it three times in a row, it’s good to put my name down in the history books.”
His rise hasn’t been defined by one moment. It’s been a steady run of dominance.
Over three seasons, Koivun has turned Auburn men’s golf into something opponents have to chase. He’s already become the program’s all-time winningest player, piling up victories at a pace that separates him from even the best to come through the program before him. This spring alone, he has won six of eight starts, and even the tournaments he didn’t win still ended with him near the top of the leaderboard.
That level of consistency is what makes his SEC three-peat feel less like a breakthrough and more like an expectation. Winning once can be a moment. Winning three straight, especially in a conference as competitive as the SEC, points to something much bigger.

The numbers only reinforce that. Koivun’s scoring this season has reached historic levels, with record-setting rounds and tournament totals that continue to separate him from the field. It’s not just that he’s winning — it’s how consistently he creates distance between himself and everyone else while doing it.
Koivun’s résumé already reflects the kind of career most players finish with, not one still in progress. He is Auburn’s all-time wins leader, a double-digit tournament winner, and has held status as the top-ranked amateur in the world. He has also produced elite finishes against PGA Tour fields, set the NCAA 36-hole scoring record, and been a key part of Auburn’s national championship season last year, all while continuing to post some of the lowest tournament scores in college golf this season.
At the same time, his impact has gone beyond individual success. Auburn has emerged as one of the top teams in the country, with Koivun setting the tone at the top of the lineup. The Tigers’ depth has been a strength all season, but having a player who can reliably contend — and win — every time out has elevated the entire group.
That combination is what defines legacy at Auburn. The names that last aren’t just the ones who put up numbers, but the ones who raise the level of everything around them. Koivun’s career is starting to follow that same path.
Even beyond the college level, the trajectory is clear. With a PGA Tour card already secured and success against professional competition, the next step is coming. But what stands out is how much has already been accomplished before that transition even happens.
At 20 years old, Koivun has already built a résumé that puts him in rare company within the program. The wins, the consistency and now a third straight SEC title all point in the same direction.
At Auburn, that kind of sustained excellence is what turns great players into legends. And with each tournament, Jackson Koivun is getting closer to that status.
