When Alex Golesh accepted the Auburn job in late November after three years at USF, many wondered how many players and, specifically, which ones, would follow the coach to the Plains.
The biggest name out there was quarterback Byrum Brown, who threw for 3,158 yards and 28 touchdowns while rushing for 1,008 yards and 14 scores for the Bulls last season. It came as no surprise that some of his wide receivers would follow that path to Auburn, including Jeremiah Koger.
Chemistry within the offense could make Auburn explosive this upcoming season
“I think it's pretty obvious that we were talking the whole time through the whole situation,” he said. “But deep in our heart, we knew that Golesh and the staff, that's what we want to play for. These are amazing people. We know they're going to take care of us.”
Koger is one of five wide receivers who join Brown on Auburn’s roster this spring, all coming with the plan of taking what they were able to do in the American Conference into the SEC. Keshaun Singleton, USF’s leading receiver from last season, is one of the top names, along with Koger, Chas Nimrod, Christian Neptune and Kory Pettigrew. With the familiarity of playing for Golesh and with Brown in the past, it’s made this spring and the transition to Auburn easier on everyone.
“It's always amazing when you and your QB have good chemistry,” Koger said. “That's always one of the best parts of being in the offense with somebody you know. He knows how you run, how you run your routes, where you're going to be, when you're going to be there, what kind of passage you need. So just having that chemistry is definitely a big step for what we need in this offense.”
USF finished third in the nation in total offense last year, putting up 488.7 yards per game. For Auburn fans who have seen sputtering offenses during the past few seasons, those numbers should have them excited for the upcoming year.
