We are halfway into the 2025 college football season, and already, seven FBS head coaches have been fired, including Penn State's James Franklin on Sunday.
With Auburn losing its third straight game on Saturday with a 20-10 loss to No. 10 Georgia at home to drop to 0-3 in SEC play, many wonder if Hugh Freeze will be next on that list of coaches seeking another job.
Auburn athletic director John Cohen, speaking to AL.com, answered in an extremely interesting way.
“I don’t know if I’m going to walk outside and my car is going to start or not, I think it is,” Cohen said. “I have an expectation it will. But if my car doesn’t start enough, then I will evaluate that and make decisions about my car. But that’s not my expectation at this point about our football program.”
Auburn's "car" got off to a solid start this season, beating Baylor on the road 38-24 before taking care of business in non-conference games against Ball State and South Alabama. SEC play hasn't been as welcoming to the Tigers, though, as losses at Oklahoma, Texas A&M and at home against the rival Bulldogs have people wondering whether Freeze, who currently holds a 14-17 record, including 5-14 in SEC play, is the answer.
And while Cohen said "never say never" about the possibility of looking for another coach during or after this season, the athletic director is still keeping the program's expectations in mind.
“My first thought isn’t about what’s next. My first thought is about, ‘Hey, is our expectation to win?’” Cohen said. “If it is, we keep evaluating and keep moving forward.”
