Lane Kiffin's LSU Tigers were floated as a potential option to sign USF Bulls quarterback Byrum Brown out of the Transfer Portal. Brown announced his intentions to enter the portal on Monday, something long expected after Alex Golesh left Tampa for the Plains.

Of course, Golesh's Auburn Tigers are in the mix for a potential Brown signing. Adding Brown and paying Deuce Knight big money to take over in 2027, or serve as a fill-in in 2026 should the worst-case scenario happened, is the working plan.

ClutchPoints' Lorenzo J Reyna believes Kiffin reaching out to Brown is "inevitable."

"LSU and Lane Kiffin enters the picture next," Reyna prefaced before saying, "Garrett Nussmeier exhausted his senior season and witnessed a coaching change. He's out on Kiffin anyway as a fifth-year senior. Leaving the incoming head coach to look at a new 2026 leader behind center.

"Kiffin thrived with two transfers for his last two Ole Miss teams: Jaxson Dart and Trinidad Chambliss. Both were their own running threats.

"Brown brings a pulverizing running style Kiffin could love. A phone call from Kiffin's office is inevitable here."

Byrum Brown can be LSU's Trinidad Chambliss fall-back option

Trinidad Chambliss has applied for a waiver for an extra year of eligibility, which would retroactively grant him a redshirt for his 2022 season with the Ferris State Bulldogs. That decision is expected to come sometime soon.

Should Chambliss be granted that year, Kiffin will assuredly call him first. The two made magic for the Ole Miss Rebels, but it's looking like Charlie Weis Jr. was the real magician, not Kiffin. Then again, Weis is Baton Rouge-bound anyway. So, same difference in a sense.

If that Chambliss pursuit fails, and the Michigan native catches a better deal elsewhere, or he simply wants to say in Oxford out of loyalty, then Brown makes sense for the Bayou Bengals.

Until that happens, there's no reason to think LSU landing Chambliss and Auburn landing Brown isn't the likeliest scenario.
