Ole Miss Rebels football coach Lane Kiffin is coming close to the season imploding in Oxford. At this point, it's clear that he's not long for Mississippi. The question has shifted to whether he'll choose the LSU Tigers or the Florida Gators as his next employer.
Oddly enough, the betting odds for Kiffin's next home have muddied the situation in many ways after his family visited Baton Rouge this past week, as LSU OnSI's Zack Nagy points out. Nagy believes Kiffin is a strong candidate for the Tigers, but notes the Gator odds are also high.
"The LSU Tigers are targeting Ole Miss head coach Lane Kiffin with the administration in Baton Rouge prepared to roll out the red carpet for the Rebels decision-maker," Nagy wrote.
"After LSU officials arranged a private jet to Oxford this week to pick up Kiffin's family as they toured Baton Rouge, it's clear the Ole Miss shot-caller is the clearcut No. 1 target on LSU's board.
"Kiffin continues seeing his betting odds shift for the LSU Tigers gig, but following the news on Monday surrounding his family flying to Baton Rouge, he's quickly emerged as the favorite.
"...Kiffin is the betting favorite for the LSU and Florida jobs as he mulls over his future."
That the odds are so high to land at LSU or Florida means Kiffin is almost certainly a goner from Ole Miss. But who knows. It's Lane Kiffin we're talking about here.
Florida no longer in the running for Auburn favorite Jon Sumrall
UF had an interview with Jon Sumrall that was promptly canceled, which was scheduled for Thursday. Whether that says anything about Kiffin to Florida, or if it was Sumrall's camp that cancelled because they want the Auburn Tigers, is anyone's guess.
Sumrall has three more weeks to get the Tulane Green Wave into the College Football Playoff as the Group of 5 auto-bid. If/when he doesn't, it'll be a good sign that there is a school with more resources somewhere that can get him to the CFP.
Maybe it'll be in a state he's succeeded, Alabama. And maybe, just maybe, the Plains will get their guy; a hard-nosed, no-nonsense coach who's more bite than bark.
