Paul Finebaum already questioning this Alex Golesh major decision at Auburn

The longtime college football commentator wonders if the Auburn coach made a mistake bringing Byrum Brown with him.

Byrum Brown hasn’t taken a real snap in a game for Auburn, but the transfer quarterback is already feeling some pressure after a bad performance in the Tigers’ annual A-Day Game.

Longtime SEC football analyst Paul Finebaum, never one to hold back his opinion, says that Brown’s job as the starting quarterback for Auburn isn’t as completely a done thing even after he came with new head coach Alex Golesh from USF.

"Alex Golesh is obviously tied to Brown, for good reason," Finebaum said. "But he also knows where he is. If Brown can't cut the competition, I don't think he'll last. That's too much at stake."

Concerns about Brown might be early, but they are out there after struggling in the spring game held on April 18, in which he threw a couple of interceptions, while Oregon State transfer Tristan T’ia showed moments of being capable of leading Auburn’s offense this fall.

But like many spring games, those results don’t matter when it comes to the real season. Many players in the past have had standout performances in April only to never pan out in the fall, and some have done the opposite. Brown will still be the overwhelming favorite to be the starting quarterback when the Tigers take the field in the season opener against Baylor, but if he struggles, it would be smart for Golesh not to feel attached.

Why? Because that might have been the downfall of his predecessor, Hugh Freeze, who seemed like Payton Thorne and Jackson Arnold were the answers at quarterback after bringing them in via the transfer portal, only to see them not live up to the billing. And, with Ashton Daniels transferring to Florida State and becoming the starting quarterback for the Seminoles so quickly, pressure has grown on Golesh to fix what has been ailing Auburn for several years now.

Brown has the potential, throwing for 3,158 yards and 28 touchdowns while rushing for 1,008 yards and 14 more scores, but a transition from the American Conference to the SEC might prove too much for him. If so, Golesh will face a difficult decision.
