Auburn football head coach Alex Golesh said it best in his press conference following the Tigers' 38-17 loss against the LSU Tigers just one week after defeating No. 1 Georgia in Athens:
"We've had the highs of highs so far, and that would be the low of lows," Golesh said.
Both the Auburn football program and the fan base needed the win against Georgia, and it boosted morale for everyone involved. But despite showing what this team is capable of if they are firing on all cylinders, they turned around and fired on basically zero cylinders against Lane Kiffin's team.
Though he was happy to give credit to Auburn last week, analyst Paul Finebaum delivered a harsh reality check to the Tigers following this week's loss on The Matt Barrie Show.
“The Auburn game was to be dismissed," Finebaum said while discussing Georgia's upcoming game against Florida. "The most disappointing performance yesterday, among the millions, was Auburn. But Georgia, I think a week off was the best thing to happen to them.”
“I know you can make a case, ‘Well, Auburn did what Auburn did the week before.’ That doesn’t matter,” Finebaum continued. “That always felt a little fluky to me, Matt. It always felt like Georgia was the team beat up that day and not coming off the bye.”
Finebaum's thoughts echoed Golesh's comments after the game, where the head coach was quick to take accountability for the team's performance.
"There's no silver lining, there's no anything," Golesh said. "That was bad in every imaginable way. Inability to run the ball, inability to convert on third downs.... really, really poor performance. Obviously didn't have them ready to rock. Really disappointing."
The Tigers have now dropped to a 4-3 overall record with a 2-3 record in SEC play. They must now shift their focus to Pete Golding and the Ole Miss Rebels as they prepare to travel to Oxford next weekend for another morning matchup.
Following the Ole Miss game, the Tigers will return home to take on Arkansas, hit the road to play Mississippi State and then host Samford before ending the regular season with the Iron Bowl in Tuscaloosa at the end of November.
Although the LSU game brought more disappointment for Auburn football, the team still has a real opportunity to beat all of the teams left on the schedule and to pick up the first winning season in five years.
