Ole Miss head coach Pete Golding got the exact result he could've wanted during a 45-15 win over Auburn at Vaught-Hemingway Stadium on Saturday.
A big reason his team was able to pull away was one of the Rebels' usual suspects, quarterback Trinidad Chambliss, who amassed 263 passing yards, two touchdown passes, 65 rushing yards, and a touchdown with his legs to go up by two scores in the fourth quarter.
Golding said he told Chambliss to let loose after the quarterback complained about his performance against Texas during a 34-27 loss in Austin last week.
"I think anytime he is a dual threat, it causes more problems for the defense," Golding said of Chambliss postgame.
Chambliss gave credit to offensive coordinator John David Baker, saying, "He is a great playcaller. I have all the trust in the world in him to make the right play call."
As for the other important part of the equation during the Ole Miss win, the defense, Golding credited the group for stopping the Tigers on third down in the second half during four of their six attempts.
"They did their job," Golding said when asked what was different on third downs for the defense in the second half.
Trinidad Chambliss played the game Byrum Brown needed to have
The cruel irony is that Chambliss played the game Auburn quarterback Byrum Brown needed to have.
Chambliss dissected a banged-up Tigers secondary through the air and found gaps when calling his own number.
Brown was credited with just five rushing yards. He was sacked four times but was on the run for nearly the entire game behind another reshuffled iteration of Auburn's offensive line. While Brown didn't throw any interceptions, he had a key fumble in the second quarter after an AnQuon Fegans interception gave the Tigers great field position deep in the Rebels' territory.
The game in its entirety was brutal for Auburn. The Tigers' defense allowed 13 third-down conversions on 16 Ole Miss attempts. DJ Durkin would've traded his group's efforts for Golding's group's, too.
Alas, the Rebels' CFP hopes live to fight another day, perhaps until Georgia next week, while Auburn now looks to clinch bowl eligibility at 4-4 with four games left to go. Arkansas, Mississippi State, and Samford await before the Iron Bowl finale after Thanksgiving.
