Auburn Daily On SI's Terrance Biggs believes one member of the Auburn football "Freeze Four" is best suited to contribute in a punt-returning role: Bryce Cain, the five-foot-10 slot receiver out of Baker (Mobile).

"Right now, based on size, film and reports, Cain runs a sub-4.5. So, where would that leave him on the field? Simply put, kickoff returns," Biggs wrote. "What better gift to an offense than a shorter field? Similarly, big returns put extreme pressure on coverage units. One failed assignment or lapse in lane integrity, Cain makes reservations for six and Auburn enjoys a seismic momentum shift.

"Those hidden yards help teams in the long run. Winning the three phases of the game matters. Bryce Cain could play a gigantic role for the Tigers. He needs the ball to prove it."

Auburn football 'Freeze Four' may not be stars immediately

Hugh Freeze's star-studded in-state quartet of Cain, Cam Coleman, Perry Thompson, and Malcolm Simmons figures to one day be among the top WR rooms in the country. But in 2024, Rivaldo Fairweather still figures to get a major bulk of the targets, while KeAndre Smith-Lambert and Robert Lewis have a chance to become popular Payton Thorne targets as upperclassmen transfers.

What could also limit the "Freeze Four" is an emphasis on the running game. Jarquez Hunter, Jeremiah Cobb, and Damari Alston represent the most trustworthy skill position group and Thorne ranked No. 112 in the country at all positions in rushing attempts. Derrick Nix's addition as offensive coordinator brings an expert in the ground game to the Plains. Nix represents Freeze's most trusted confidant throughout his career. He'll have Freeze's ear and will have influence on the offensive game plan.

Of the bunch, Coleman has the most potential to contribute immediately. His star may be too bright not to shine and he was an early enrollee this past spring.

It may be wise to give the young group time before expecting them to shoulder the load for the Tigers just yet.
