After bowl preparations and the holiday break, Auburn football is back in action and beginning winter workouts
It's the beginning of a new year on the Plains, and the beginning of Auburn football's second year under head coach Hugh Freeze. It was a season of ups and downs for the Tigers in 2023 involving making it to a bowl game during a rebuilding year but losing several big, close games to rival teams.
Despite the 6-7 season, it is clear that the Auburn football program is on an upward trajectory. Freeze is making clear changes to improve the team, like parting ways with both the offensive and defensive coordinators and making high school recruiting a major priority again.
Now, with early national signing day in the rear view mirror and the winter portal window closed, Auburn football is beginning winter workouts with their returning players and fifteen new 2024 signees, four walk-ons, and six transfers.
According to returning linebacker Eugene Asante, the foundation for the 2024 season starts with winter workouts, and this is the time for the team to come together and challenge themselves to be great, per Auburn Rivals:
“It 100 percent starts with winter workouts,” said rising senior linebacker Eugene Asante. “Because you're putting your body in a condition to where it's hard, you don't want to do it, your body's worn down. But that's when the mental game kicks in.
“Instead of them leaning on quitting or just tapping out, it's allowing them to push themselves beyond their limits. And that's what shows up on the football field.”
Head coach Hugh Freeze said that it takes a player-led team to build an elite program, and that will be one of the main focuses during the offseason. We can expect guys like Asante and Keionte Scott, along with rising sophomore Keldric Faulk, to be team leaders in 2024.
