Auburn football legend stands up for city he played most of his NFL career for, warns owner
Auburn football legend Cam Newton was a voice for the voiceless in his warning to David Tepper for wanting $650 million in upgrades at Bank of America Stadium -- something that'll cost the residents of the city plenty in taxes.
"Ain't none of this sh*t gonna be worth a f**k if you got the chairman, the president or the CEO or the person who's making the calls, isn't at one with the city...I don't care how much money you got," Newton said (h/t Sportskeeda). "I don't care how much money you asking for. But if you're not at one, the number one in charge, is not at one with the city, it's not gonna work. It's not, so take it for what it's worth."
Newton has always paid it back to places he's called home. The Panthers employed Superman for 10 of his 11 NFL seasons. Speaking up for the entire city, many of who have no use for Bank of America Stadium upgrades, Newton delivered.
But it's worth mentioning that Tepper has provoked Newton in the past.
Auburn football legend Cam Newton pitched to replace David Tepper as Panthers owner
CatCrave's Dean Jones believes Newton is a slam dunk replacement for Tepper as Panthers owner. For that to ever happen, it'd take massive financial gains from his broadcast career and teaming up with a powerhouse group of investors. NFL franchises are increasing in value every season.
This all to say: it's not out of the realm of possibility, but may take many years to manifest.
Ultimately, it's clear Newton may never forgive Tepper for ending his celebrated stint with Carolina. The short-lived reunion in 2021 could only do so much to build the bridges back
If nothing else, though, Newton sticking up for the people speaks volumes to his character and love for Charlotte.
