Auburn football trashed for social media team's gravely unfortunate mistake

Auburn did not need the social media team to make a grave mistake or intentionally cause a stir by retweeting Gump propaganda. But that's the situation OutKick's Mark Harris pointed out in a piece titled "Auburn Football Shares Pro-Alabama Post On Social Media As Program Continues To Take L's."

Harris explained how ex-UGA QB Stetson Bennett losing an Alabama-Georgia-themed bet to one of his Los Angeles Rams targets following a spectacular 41-34 Crimson Tide win over the Bulldogs in Week 5 ended up on the feeds of those following Auburn football on Twitter.

And shared concern for the timing of such a gaffe.

"Over the weekend, former Georgia quarterback Stetson Bennett lost a bet to Los Angeles Rams teammate Miller Forristall, who went to Alabama," Harris prefaced before saying, "With the Tide getting the best of Georgia in the all-time thriller, Bennett owned up to the bet and wore an Alabama hat in the Rams' team facility. A well-known Alabama account shared the photo of Bennett on X, and for whatever reason, the photo ended up on Auburn's official account after the social media manager hit the re-post button, clearly on accident. The re-post was quickly undone, but the Internet never sleeps and screenshots live forever.

"Mistakes happen, but my goodness this is a big one that could not have possibly come at a worse time for Auburn football and Tiger fans."

When it rains, it pours on the Plains: Hugh Freeze's Auburn football program is snake-bitten

Auburn football's official X account didn't necessarily have to be a Crimson Tide fan with an agenda in plain sight. It may have been an AU student who appreciates the gamesmanship between Bennett and Miller Forristall.

Unfortunately, the narrative that it was an undercover Gump is already being run with. Auburn is inept on the field when it matters, turning the ball over a sickening amount when the offense is making positive downfield progress -- and now some paint the picture of the sky falling anytime something happens that can be misconstrued to be anti-AU.

The media firestorm cannot be stopped by anything but Tiger wins. They just may be tough to come by in 2024.
