In today's edition of Auburn Tigers News, head coach Hugh Freeze provides an update on the quarterbacks during spring practice and a 5-star offensive lineman is looking to set an official visit with the Tigers

As spring practice continues on the Plains, one of the more interesting storylines revolves around this year's quarterback competition. Battling it out are returning starter Payton Thorne, sophomore Holden Geriner, redshirt freshman Hank Brown, and true freshman Walker White.

While it seems obvious that the returning starter would win the battle, and that is likely what will play out, there are still questions to be explored. Head coach Hugh Freeze were expected to stick with Thorne in 2024 and pass on any portal QBs, but after an appalling performance in the Music City Bowl the staff changed their minds and seemed to be searching for a transfer.

It didn't work out ahead of spring practice, but there is always a possibility someone could arrive in the summer. Either way, Freeze gave an update on the competition to the media earlier this week about which QB was the most consistent so far.

"Payton Thorne is still the most consistent because he's had the most reps and the most understanding of what defenses can do to you," said Freeze, per Auburn Daily.

5-star offensive lineman is looking to set an official visit with the Tigers

Tuesday morning, 5-star offensive lineman Josh Petty from Roswell, Georgia, made his way to the Plains for an unofficial visit with the Auburn football program, and he is leaving with intentions to return for an official.

Ranked as the #2 offensive tackle in the recruiting class of 2025 and the #4 prospect out of the Peach State, Petty said that Auburn has always held a special place in his heart and that offensive line coach Jake Thornton has been involved in his recruiting process for a long time.

Petty has only one official visit scheduled so far, to Florida State, but plans to make a return trip to Auburn's campus sooner than later.

"I would love to schedule one with Auburn," Petty said, per Auburn Rivals. "The environment around here, it’s special. Auburn’s really a home environment, they seem like they care about you. Family all around and just treating guys special."
