Hugh Freeze still groups Auburn football's Freeze Four together and he still gets asked about the aggregate. When questioned about the quartet, Freeze complemented the collective for being a potentially "special" core during an appearance at the 68 Ventures Bowl 1st & 10 Club in Mobile on October 7.

“They’re freshmen,” Freeze said of the Freeze Four (h/t AL.com). “They’re really, really talented and are starting to catch on and understand how this game has to be played against some of the elite athletes in the secondary at some of the other places.

“We’re really excited about their future. I think all four of them — Bryce, Cam, Perry and Malcolm — I think all four have huge ceilings and chances to be really, really special.”

Thus far, Malcolm Simmons has been the standout of the group. Through six games, Simmons is the No. 2 receiver on the team. The Benjamin Russell product has 18 catches for 260 yards and a pair of touchdowns.

Cam Coleman has battled through a shoulder injury but has 212 yards on just nine catches and a Week 1 touchdown to his name. His ceiling may be the highest, though he's had some early gaffes; specifically in blocking during a 31-13 loss to Georgia.

Perry Thompson and Bryce Cain, on the other hand, have been non-factors since the 73-3 Alabama A&M rout that feels like centuries ago at this point. The two have a combined six catches for 156 yards on the year.

Hugh Freeze backtracked on having open WR rotation for Auburn football

Freeze promised his entire WR room extended looks for the whole lot, but things quickly changed in 2024 after he backtracked from a planned open rotation.

Freeze doesn't need to explain himself considering how well his offense moves down the field. It's the turnovers killing the Tigers' offense, remember. Not the offensive gameplan.

What he does need to do, though, is make sure he doesn't lose any of his star Class of 2024 WRs over a promise that didn't pan out.
