In a surprising move, two young defensive backs have decided to part ways with Auburn football and enter the transfer portal
Earlier this week, the Auburn football program was very active in the transfer portal and picked up three commitments in the span of 24 hours. However, the portal giveth and the portal taketh away, and news broke Tuesday that defensive backs Colton Hood and Tyler Scott would be parting ways with the Tigers and entering the transfer portal.
It's considering to be somewhat of a surprising move as the pair were working their way up as important contributors in the Tigers' secondary especially after the loss of Nehemiah Pritchett, DJ James, and Jaylin Simpson to the NFL Draft. In fact, on Pro Day both Hood and Scott were mentioned as up and comers and both were making waves in spring practice earlier this year.
Colton Hood was a 4-star cornerback out of high school from McDonough, Georgia, and signed with Auburn football in the recruiting class of 2023. He redshirted last season but saw game action in four games and recorded three total tackles.
Tyler Scott was also a 4-star cornerback out of high school who signed with the Tigers in the class of 2023. From Mableton, Georgia, Scott was ranked as the #20 CB in his recruiting class. He redshirted and saw game action in five games including the Music City Bowl and logged two tackles.
With the pair's departures, it's likely that head coach Hugh Freeze and the coaching staff will try to bring in another cornerback through the transfer portal. Though neither Scott nor Hood were expected to be starters, their absence limits the depth of the secondary. Even with all the DBs still on the roster, most are young and lacking experience, so expect a veteran CB from the portal before the end of the spring window.
