Seattle Seahawks EDGE Derick Hall re-signed with the Seattle Seahawks on Tuesday, inking a three-year deal worth $42 million. The contract features $21 million guaranteed and can reach up to $46.5 million with incentives.

Seattle Sports' Brock & Salk hosts, Brock Huard and Mike Salk, explained in detail why the deal was such a win for the Seahawks, mainly alluding to the fact that they got him for cheaper than Boye Mafe, who signed with the Cincinnati Bengals for the same number of years but up to $60 million.

“Let’s be very clear, the Seahawks chose Derick Hall over Boye Mafe,” Huard said. “That’s why they let him walk in free agency. Boye Mafe signed a three-year, $60 million deal. The guy they chose to stay – the guy they wanted to stay – they just signed to a three-year, $42 million extension that folds into this year’s number. It’s extraordinary.”

“I’m honestly blown away,” Salk said. “… In a vacuum, forgetting about money, I think they wanted Derick Hall over Boye Mafe. So the fact that they get him at almost half the price? I don’t even know what to make of that. Like, how is that even possible? Kudos. All the respect, all the props. That is one heck of a deal. Every Seahawks fan should be pretty excited today.”

In terms of what separates the two, Mafe brings a higher ceiling athletically. That's what drove his price higher. Well, that and the Bengals' desperate need to improve their pass rush, which ranked dead last in the league.

Of course, that doesn't mean Mafe is the better investment. Clearly, Seattle knows where to put its money, having just won the Super Bowl. Hall is a better run defender than Mafe and has an impeccable pressure rate. Hall had the No. 16 run-defense grade, a 14.6% pressure rate, and 41 pressures in 2025.

It's merely John Schneider's job to pinch pennies when necessary and nab bargains. Ask Brock and Salk, and Schneider did his job as well as possible.

Derick Hall gives Auburn football its 42nd Super Bowl champion

With Seattle's Super Bowl win, Hall and Nehemiah Pritchett became the 41st and 42nd former Auburn Tigers to win the big game. In every year since 2021, an Auburn alum has been on the Super Bowl-winning team.

While there hasn't been much success on the Plains during that time span, and NFL-caliber talent was more sparse following the Bryan Harsin years, the remnants of the Gus Malzahn era are still representing the program well in the pros. Hall played his first two years under Malzahn and Kevin Steele, then two under Bryan Harsin, with one of those under Derek Mason and the other under Jeff Schmedding. He's a symbol of persistence and loyalty, and a fine example of an Auburn man. Hall has won the Freddie Solomon Community Spirit Award and was once a semifinalist for the Jason Witten Man of the Year award.

Here's to more future Super Bowl champions and future multi-millionaires who once called the Loveliest Village on the Plains home and can represent the orange and blue like Hall does.
