In the 89 meetings between Auburn and Alabama in the Iron Bowl, there have been memorable games, players and plays that will be forever etched into the minds of fans of both schools.
With the game meaning so much to both sides, each loss is a disaster that takes days or weeks to get over, while a win feels like a burst of enthusiasm and joy that many won't find in any other facet of life.
While Auburn has been on the winning side of some legendary games against the Crimson Tide, the Tigers have also suffered heartbreaking losses that will be discussed forever. Here are the five most agonizing losses for Auburn against Alabama this century.
5. 2014 - Alabama 55, Auburn 44
A year after the Kick Six, neither defense could get off the field, as the two offenses combined for 1,169 yards, with the teams trading leads. In the end, the Crimson Tide had more energy in the fourth quarter, outscoring Auburn 21-8 in the final 15 minutes.
4. 2001 - Alabama 31, Auburn 7
With a win, Auburn would reach its second straight SEC title game. The Tigers wouldn't even come close, as Andrew Zow threw for four touchdowns and the Crimson Tide shut out the Tigers in the second half. Tommy Tuberville would not lose to Alabama again after this game until 2008.
3. 2009 - Alabama 26, Auburn 21
The Crimson Tide were undefeated in Nick Saban's third season, while Auburn was in its first year under head coach Gene Chizik. Still, the Tigers threw everything at Alabama in the first quarter, quickly taking a 14-0 lead. Alabama scored 14 unanswered points in the second quarter to tie it at halftime.
Auburn's defense (and fans) kept the Tigers in the game, but a touchdown pass by Greg McElroy with 1:24 to go proved to be the winner. The Tide would go on to win their first national title in 17 years.

2. 2021 - Alabama 24, Auburn 22 (4OT)
Derick Hall and Auburn's defense had made life difficult for Bryce Young and the Alabama offense all night long, shutting the Crimson Tide out through three quarters. And, with the score standing 10-3 with less than two minutes to go and Alabama on its own 3-yard line, it seemed Bryan Harsin would pull off the upset in his first year on the Plains.
Young and Ja'Corey Brooks had other plans, as they connected for the game-tying touchdown with 24 seconds left. The two teams traded touchdowns in the first overtime, field goals in the second, and both were successful on two-point attempts in the third. After Auburn failed on its try in the fourth overtime, Young found John Metchie III for the game-winner.
1. 2023 - Alabama 27, Auburn 24
Jordan-Hare Stadium voodoo was haunting Saban and the Crimson Tide once again, as Hugh Freeze and the Tigers were a 4th-and-31 stop away from pulling off the upset and knocking Alabama out of the College Football Playoff.
In one of the top five memorable plays in Iron Bowl history, Jalen Milroe found Isaiah Bond for the game-winning touchdown that Freeze and every Auburn fan will rue forever.
