Top-ranked Auburn in good position, but work must be done to advance to championships

The Tigers sit in third after Day 2 of the NCAA Regionals, four shots ahead of sixth-place Charleston.

Top-ranked Auburn continues to be in a good position following Day 2 of the NCAA Regionals at the University of Georgia Golf Course after shooting seven-under for the second straight day.

The Tigers sit in third place at -14 and are four shots ahead of sixth-place Charleston with one day to go. The top five teams from the regional advance to the NCAA Championships in Carlsbad, Calif., later this month.

One day after firing a six-under 65, Josiah Gilbert paced the Tigers once again, shooting three under with five birdies and a double bogey.

“I kind of scrapped it around pretty good today,” Gilbert said. “I didn’t have much working for me. I hit some poor iron shots, one of them cost me a double, but I made a couple putts when I needed to.”

Freshman Jake Albert followed Gilbert’s lead, firing a 68 (-3) with four birdies and a bogey. Haskins Award finalist and SEC Player of the Year Jackson Koivun continued to struggle, at least comparitively speaking, finishing with a second straight 70 (-1). 

The front nine was rough for Logan Reilly, as he bogeyed No. 1, No. 3 and No. 9, but he responded with three straight birdies to start the back nine, finishing at even par. Cayden Pope birdied No. 12 and No. 14 to go with two bogeys to also finish at even par.

Auburn tees off the first hole in 11-minute intervals starting at 8 a.m. ET on Wednesday in the final round and are set to be paired with leader Vanderbilt (-22) and Louisville (-19). 

The Tigers and head coach Nick Clinard are trying to reach the NCAA Championships in Carlsbad, Calif., where they won the program’s first national title in 2024 by defeating Florida State in the finals.
