Auburn's head football coaching position has been open for just more than 24 hours, but the oddsmakers in Las Vegas and media outlets are trying to figure out who will be the next man that the Tigers hire to lead their program.
Vegas oddsmakers already have a list of favorites on their boards, including current Tulane head coach Jon Sumrall. The 43-year-old coach has become a hot name since leading the Green Wave to a 9-5 record last season and sits 6-2 this year. He has plenty of SEC coaching experience with stops at Kentucky and Ole Miss. He is the favorite right now at +300 to take over on the Plains.
Another up-and-coming head coach, Alex Golesh at USF, is second at +375. Golesh and the Bulls made headlines earlier this season after going into The Swamp and taking down Florida. He previously served as the offensive coordinator at Tennessee from 2021 to 2022, his only experience coaching in the conference.
DJ Durkin, who was named the interim head coach following the firing of Hugh Freeze on Sunday, could be another name to look at. The current Auburn defensive coordinator has odds of +900, the third-best to take over the head coaching position.
Some extremely interesting names follow, including Brent Key (+1500), the current head coach at Georgia Tech, current Missouri head coach Eli Drinkwitz (+2000), who served as a quality control coach for the Tigers when they won the 2010 national championship, and Jon Gruden (+2000), who has minimal college experience.
James Franklin (+2500) also pops up in the odds. He was fired from Penn State earlier this season after 11 seasons in State College.
Whomever takes over will have a massive task ahead to get the Auburn program back on the right track. The Tigers have had four straight losing seasons and are on pace to make it five straight with the 10-3 loss to Kentucky on Saturday.
