Six players currently committed to the 2015 Auburn football recruiting class participated in the Under Armour All-American Game Friday in St. Petersburg, Florida. Linebacker Darrell Williams, a four-star prospect, played the best.

According to the 247Sports Composite, Williams is the fifth best high school senior in the state of Alabama, the nation’s 13th best outside linebacker prospect and the 188th ranked player overall in this year’s recruiting class. He has been committed to Auburn since May 2014, but there is still a chance he could flip to Alabama before National Signing Day on February 4. The 247Sports Crystal Ball projects Williams is 73% likely to stick with his commitment to the Tigers.

The 6-foot-3, 226-pound Hoover, Alabama native had two interceptions for Team Highlight, who defeated Team Armour 46-6 in the contest that featured more than 100 of the country’s most highly-touted high school football prospects. Williams helped the Team Highlight defense dominate the afternoon, holding Team Armour without even a first down in the second half and only six during the entire game.

Williams’ first interception came in the end zone and he returned it 47 yards. He also had three tackles.

Unfortunately, Williams was the only Tigers commit on the winning end. Offensive lineman Bailey Sharp, safety Jordan Colbert, athlete Kerryon Johnson and linebacker Richard McBryde were on the losing side (as was injured D’Anfernee McGriff, who didn’t play in the game).

Williams played well, but not well enough to earn MVP honors. Instead, five-star defensive end and Auburn target Byron Cowart took home the hardware. To two both contributed to Williams’ second interception, which was tipped by Cowart.

“It shows that I am developing, it shows that I am maturing, it shows that I am getting ready for the next level,” Cowart said of his performance that included four tackles and a sack. “I felt that coming out here, that I might be tired, but I felt like if I went hard in the practices, it would be easy. I don’t want to say it was easy, but it was easier than practice. I almost had one (a touchdown), but hey, it will look good on the highlights.”

  • Cowart is undecided as to where he will play college football, but the Tigers are in the mix – along with Florida and Florida State – thanks to new defensive coordinator Will Muschamp.

As for the other players committed to this year’s Auburn football recruiting class, Sharp was matched up against Cowart on several occasions, and did relatively well considering the pass rusher is one of the nation’s highest rated recruits.

Johnson was pretty quiet during Friday’s game after showing out all week in practice. Expected to be a running back at Auburn, the 6-foot, 200-pound Madison, Alabama native played defense for Team Armour. Johnson had three tackles during the game.

McBryde also had three tackles, but his most impressive play was a pass breakup. Colbert re-aggrivated a shoulder injury he suffered earlier this season, but it isn’t expected to be serious. McGriff is still recovering from a torn ACL.

“It’s been a great week,” McGriff said Wednesday. “Having the opportunity to get out here and see other guys compete and see all the other talent that’s in the country. Hanging out with the top players in the nation, it’s a blessing just to be here.”
