Auburn Recruiting: Tigers Making a Push For Four-Star Receiver Ryan Davis?

Countdown to National Signing Day: 28 Days

The 2015 Auburn recruiting class has a few weaknesses so far, specifically on the defensive line and at wide receiver. There has been a lot of movement among high-profile recruits in recent days, and the Tigers seem to be in the mix for five-star defensive end Byron Cowart and newly decommitted defender Arden Key, as well as talented wideout John Burt.

Now, Auburn appears to be making a push for four-star receiver Ryan Davis. Earlier this week, Davis told AuburnUndercover ($) he was “talking to Auburn everyday,” and he is expected to make an official visit to the Plains in January.

Davis is ranked 200th nationally on the 247Sports Composite, is the country’s 22nd rated wide receiver and the 28th best player in the state of Florida according to the website. He’s currently uncommitted, though Florida is considered the favorite at 53% in the Crystal Ball, followed by Florida State, Auburn and Kentucky. Maryland and Alabama are also in the mix for his services.

Listed at 5-foot-10 and 157 pounds by ESPN.com, and with a 4.75-second time in the 40-yard dash, Davis’s measurables don’t jump out on paper or screen. But some players are just ballers, and Davis falls into that category.

Davis is extremely athletic, has the ability to turn on a dime and make defenders look silly in the open field. He fits the mold of Auburn senior wideout Quan Bray and upcoming junior Marcus Davis as a slot receiver and potential return man, though his ceiling is considerably higher.

Like Marcus Davis, Ryan Davis was a high school quarterback. He threw for 6,828 yards in his career at Lakewood Senior High School, and this season alone ran for 856 yards and eight touchdowns on only 57 attempts – a staggering 15 yards per carry.

As Niebuhr notes in the tweet above, Davis is a playmaking prospect from Florida. Since head coach Gus Malzahn added former Florida head coach Will Muschamp and former Gators defensive backs coach Travaris Robinson to his coaching staff, the Tigers have picked up a lot of momentum in the Sunshine State.

“T-Rob was by far the biggest asset that the Florida coaching staff had going for it under Muschamp,” Barton Simmons, scouting director for 247sports, told AL.com recently. “If you’re putting together a dream team staff of college recruiters, I don’t think there’s any question that right now, T-Rob would be on that staff. He’s become a force recruiting the state of Florida, especially in Miami, and I think with him you’re going to see Auburn become a factor with a lot of those Dade and Broward County athletes in south Florida.”

Though Muschamp and T-Rob are defensive coaches, their recruiting prowess in Florida should help the Tigers on both side of the football.

The pair, in coordination with Davis’ primary recruiter, offensive coordinator Rhett Lashlee could help land Davis, adding a much needed offensive weapon to the 2015 Auburn recruiting class.
