Auburn Recruiting: Can Muschamp Help Flip Top Receiver Targets Williams and Godwin?
Countdown to National Signing Day: 26 Days
Thursday night, ESPN posted a video on the recruiting impact of recent coordinator hires around college football. The first name they discussed is new Auburn defensive coordinator Will Muschamp, though analyst Gerry Hamilton made sure to point out new Tigers defensive backs coach Travaris Robinson as well.

Muschamp and Robinson are all-stars when it comes to recruiting, and they have helped the Tigers pick up steam in the final month of the 2015 recruiting season. However, that has yet to translate to any new commitments to the upcoming Auburn recruiting class.
However, a date to watch, as the video points out, is the weekend of January 16 – the first official visit weekend since Muschamp was hired.
Muschamp, Robinson, head coach Gus Malzahn and the rest of the Auburn coaching staff will have a huge collection of talent in Auburn that weekend, including five-star defensive tackle Terry Beckner Jr., Under All-American Game MVP Byron Cowart, four-star linebacker Jeff Holland, electrifying athlete Ryan Davis, and potentially five-star defender CeCe Jefferson.
Most interesting, perhaps, are a couple of five-star committed wide receiver prospects that will be in attendance: Tennessee commit Preston Williams and Georgia commit Terry Godwin. Can Muschamp, a noted “flipper,” help sway Williams and/or Godwin to join him on the Plains?
Godwin, a 6-foot, 168-pound Hogansville, Georgia native is considered an athlete by 247Sports, and ranks 20th overall in the 247Sports Composite, the top athlete in the nation and the fourth best player in the Peach State.
He has been committed to the Bulldogs for nearly a year, but Auburn will have an opportunity to make an impression on him before Signing Day (as will Alabama and Texas A&M).
A vertical deep threat, Godwin has good speed and is very smooth with the ball in his hands. In high school, Godwin was utilized in many ways, including as a Wildcat quarterback and on jet sweeps.

Williams is a 6-foot-4, 191-pound wideout considered to be a top-30 national prospect, the fifth best wide receiver in the nation and a top five player from Georgia. He’s not a burner (4.75-second 40-yard dash), but Williams is a huge target that can go up and get jump balls and bring them down in traffic. Think a taller D’haquille Williams, especially if Preston Williams adds some weight in college.
The Hampton native has been committed to the Vols since September 2013, and will visit Knoxville again January 30, but Auburn is still in the picture – even if it’s a long shot. Interestingly enough despite his long-standing commitment, Williams appears to be strongly considering flipping. The 247Sports Crystal Ball projects him as 80% likely to sign with Georgia and 20% to end up at South Carolina.
Flipping both Williams and Godwin is extremely unlikely, though not completely out of the question. They have both agreed to visit campus after all, and if Muschamp, Robinson, Malzahn and the loveliest little village work their magic on a few of the other big-name prospects, a Dream Team recruiting scenario could take shape.
Still, it’s best Auburn football fans don’t get their hopes up too high. Just keep your fingers crossed.
