Auburn Recruiting: Tiger Targets January 23 Visit News and Updates

facebooktwitterreddit

National Signing Day is just 12 days away, and the weekend of January 23 is very important for the 2015 Auburn recruiting class, not only because some prospects considering the Tigers will be on campus in Auburn, but also because many will be on campuses across the Southeast. Where will the top Tigers targets be visiting this week?

Auburn

  • LB Richard McBryde: An Auburn commit, McBryde planned to be on hand last week for his official visit, but a death in the family forced a change of plans.
  • CB Jeremiah Dinson:

A three-star cornerback from Florida, Dinson is a bit of a late Auburn target and the Tigers weren’t expected to have much of a shot until recently. Committed to Kentucky – though it’s a “very soft” commitment according to Dinson – the 6-foot, 180-pound corner has good size and a high ceiling.  Florida is also still in the mix and he will visit Louisville later this month.

UPDATE: Through Twitter, Dinson announced he has de-committed from Kentucky. Auburn is expected to be his new leader and he will make a decision next week.

  • WR Preston Williams: A five-star Tennessee commit, Preston Williams was expected to visit Auburn last weekend, but had to make a late change to his schedule. At the time, he was expected to push the visit back to this weekend and 247Sports confirmed he’ll be on campus. Auburn may have picked up some steam, especially with the Vols losing their offensive coordinator to the NFL, but the general consensus is that Georgia has the best chance to get Williams if he flips. UPDATE: Williams left his official visit early. The odds don’t look good for Williams to flip to AU.
  • CB Carlton Davis: A surprise visitor this weekend is Ohio State commit and four-star cornerback Carlton Davis. Yet another player from South Florida, Davis is the most talented cornerback target on Auburn’s radar. Davis has terrific size at 6-foot-2 and 187 pounds. He is considered the 26th best corner in this year’s class by 247Sports.
  • WR Darius Slayton: Even more surprising than Carlton Davis, Georgia commit Darius Slayton will be in Auburn this weekend as reported by Justin Hokanson. According to AuburnUndercover, Auburn originally recruited Slayton – who is one of the fastest players in the country – as a cornerback. He is a 6-foot-1, 182-pound four-star prospect from the Atlanta area.
  • K/P Ian Shannon: A lock to sign with Auburn, Shannon is on an official visit after being on campus last weekend for an unofficial visit.
  • WR Camion Patrick: Keith Niebuhr has now confirmed that JUCO wide receiver Camion Patrick made it to Auburn for a visit. He had this to say about Patrick: “A Tennessee native, Patrick is an immensely talented prospect who helped least EMCC to the junior national title. He’s also an elite kick returner. The 6-foot-2, 215-pound Patrick signed with Tennessee out of high school.”
  • OL Ryan Meneely: Meneely, a high school teammate of redshirt freshman Andrew Williams, has committed to join the 2015 Auburn recruiting class. He will be a preferred walk-on, and therefore will not count against this season’s scholarship limits.
  • Not DT Daylon Mack: The most highly touted recruit expected to be in town this weekend was five-star defensive tackle Daylon Mack, but it appears he has cancelled. Getting Mack – who dominated at the Under Armour All-American Game – to campus would have been great, but the Tigers were considered a distant third place to Texas A&M and TCU for the Lone Star State product.
  • Not CB Justin Martin: The four-star Tennessee commit was expected to make an official visit to Auburn this weekend, but those plans have changed.
  • Florida

    DE Byron Cowart:

The most important recruit in this year’s class

, Cowart said this week his final two schools are Florida and Auburn. The five-star Sunshine State native was expected to visit Florida State January 30, but that now looks doubtful.

UPDATE: Cowart left his visit early, but through Twitter said he spent a lot of time speaking with Florida head coach Jim McElwain and the Gators are still under consideration. He will decide on February 4.

  • OL Martez Ivey: Cowart and Ivey are the top two Tigers targets of this year’s class, and they are two of the very best prospects in the nation. Ivey is expected to be in Gainesville for an unofficial visit this weekend, and is likely to sign with either the Gators or Auburn on National Signing Day.
  • WR Ryan Davis: Another Auburn recruiting target from the state of Florida, Davis was in town last weekend, and the Tigers are climbing his list. However, Florida may be the leader for the speedster, and Florida State is also lurking.
  • ATH D’Anfernee McGriff: An Auburn commit, McGriff is planning to visit the Gators this weekend. He’s said to be 100% committed to the Tigers and was in town last weekend to help recruit for Auburn.
  • Ole Miss

    • DE CeCe Jefferson: One of the big name prospects in town for Big Boom Weekend, the Tigers have made a lot of progress on Jefferson in a relatively short time. He’s said recently he’d like to be part of a package deal with Cowart and Jeffrey Holland, and that makes us think it’s down to Auburn and Florida, but Jefferson named Ole Miss his leader a few weeks ago, so there’s still a lot of mystery to this one.
    • LB Jeffrey Holland: Holland and Jefferson are buddies, and the four-star linebacker is spending the weekend with Jefferson in Oxford. Like Cowart, it was believed that Holland was down to Auburn and Florida as a final two, but he’s been quiet lately and it’s possible he has legitimate interest in the Rebels. Especially if Jefferson does. UPDATE: Holland seems to be enjoying himself in Oxford and Tweeted: “I absolutely love it here.”

    Alabama

    • WR Terry Godwin: A five-star Georgia commit, the Tigers made a good impression on Godwin last weekend. Right now, the odds of Godwin flipping anywhere appear to be slim, but the Tigers probably have a slightly better chance than the Tide.
    • Not Kerryon Johnson or Darrell Williams: In an interesting development, five-star running back Kerryon Johnson cancelled his trip to Tuscaloosa earlier this week. Williams was also expected to visit Alabama until Thursday, when the Bama coaching staff tried to push him back to next weekend. As a result, Williams said the Crimson Tide (believed to be Auburn’s top competition for the four-star linebacker) will no longer receive a visit.

    LSU

Jul 9, 2014; Beaverton, OR, USA; Alpha Pro athlete Torrance Gibson (6) heads to the line of scrimmage during Nike Football

    • QB Torrance Gibson: Auburn reportedly made up a lot of ground on Gibson, an Ohio State commit, last week. The Buckeyes’ stacked quarterback situation is supposedly scaring Gibson a bit, and following last week it sounded like Auburn might have the best chance to flip him. Of course, Auburn is a bit more settled at quarterback heading into 2015 than LSU and Gibson wants to play early. That could make this week’s visit to Baton Rouge very intriguing.
    • OL Chidi Valentine-Okeke: Alabama is the favorite to land the recently anointed five-star prospect, though Auburn is still in the hunt and LSU is expected to be a distant third.

    South Carolina

    • DE Arden Key: Key decommitted from South Carolina earlier this month, and his recruitment is wide open at the moment. The Gamecocks are still very much in the mix, as is Georgia. Key visited Miami last weekend and will make a trip to the Plains January 30. He would be a nice addition to the Auburn recruiting class, especially if the Tigers miss out on Cowart and/or Jefferson.

    Louisville

    • CB Sheldrick Redwine: A Louisville commit, Redwine was believed to be 50/50 between the Cards and Tigers after his visit to Auburn last week. Cornerback is a priority in this class, and the Tigers are thin at the position.
    • CB Javarius Davis: A three-star corner from Jacksonville, Davis was in Auburn last weekend. The Tigers have a good shot to land him to bolster the crop of defensive backs in this year’s class.

    Ohio State

    • DT Terry Beckner, Jr.: By all indications, Beckner had a good trip to Auburn last weekend. However, it’s unlikely he plays football for the Tigers. Ohio State is the biggest threat to Missouri for this East St. Louis product, though Florida State is still in the picture.

Keep in mind that this is a fluid list. Some players that are scheduled to attend a recruiting weekend may not, while others may make a last minute change of plans.

January 23-25 doesn’t have the “biggest recruiting weekend in the history of the program” tag that last week’s did, but it will still have an impact on the 2015 Auburn recruiting class.
