Auburn Recruiting Targets January 30, 31 Visits, News and Updates

Hang in there. It’s almost National Signing Day. It’s the final weekend before high school and junior college players can sign their letters of intent and fax them in, and the 2015 Auburn recruiting class is nearly complete.

So, what targets are visiting AU and elsewhere this week? And what can we expect?

Auburn

  • DE Arden Key: The top target scheduled to be in town this weekend is four-star defensive lineman Arden Key. The Georgia native has twice committed and de-committed from South Carolina, but the Gamecocks are still very much in the mix. Earlier this week, we projected Key would end up signing with the Tigers. He is expected to announce his decision Monday evening on Fox Sports South. UPDATE: Welp… things have changed. Arden Key has canceled his official visit to Auburn this weekend according to AuburnUndercover’s Keith Niebuhr, which effectively puts the Tigers out of the running. This isn’t good news for Auburn… unless it is? Could Key’s cancellation mean Auburn has a legitimate shot to land Cowart and Jefferson? Time will tell.
  • DE Prince Tega Wanogho, Jr:

One of the few players that may not make up his mind by National Signing Day, Prince Tega is a late addition to the 2015 recruiting class after reclassifying from 2016 status. A raw four-star prospect with a sky-high ceiling, the Nigeria native has a very limited football background and also recently suffered a major leg injury playing basketball. He is one of Auburn’s top targets and we project he will sign with the Tigers.

  • WR Dominique Reed: Auburn is late getting into the picture for 6-foot-4 JUCO wide receiver Dominique Reed, but not too late ($). The Arkansas native is expected to be leaning towards the Hogs, and Texas is also in the mix.
  • WR Devante Peete: According to 247Sports, 6-foot-5 wide receiver Devante Peete is expected to be in Auburn this weekend. The Florida native lists his final three schools as Louisville, Florida State and Auburn. UPDATE: Peete cancelled his visit, and appears to be headed to Louisville.
  • CB Nate Ferguson: Tampa native Nate Ferguson, an Eastern Michigan commit, is expected to be in Auburn this weekend. The three-star prospect is ranked 1,695th overall in the 247Sports composite and 195th nationally among cornerbacks.
  • DT Kendrick Norton: Originally scheduled to visit North Carolina, four-star defensive tackle Kendrick Norton is in Auburn this weekend instead. Interestingly enough, Norton had been expected to attend “Big Boom Weekend” two weeks ago along with his high school teammate Jeffrey Holland, but chose to visit Miami. The Hurricanes and Florida appear to have better odds to land the Miami native than the Tigers.
  • OL Michael Horton: Florida commit Michael Horton, a three-star offensive lineman from Atlanta, is on an official visit to Auburn. His arrival was somewhat unexpected, and the odds of him flipping to the Tigers are quite low. UPDATE:”I had a great visit, I’m going to go home and talk to my mom and coaches and think about it a little bit. I still like Florida a lot, Auburn’s a great school, I’m going to think about it. I’m still committed to Florida,” Horton told AuburnUndercover.
  • Not Davante Davis: Originally expected to visit Auburn this weekend, Davante Davis will not make the trip after all. He also re-affirmed his pledge to the Texas Longhorns.
  • LB Richard McBryde: An Auburn commit, McBryde considered visiting Florida this weekend, but trekked to the Plains instead to help recruit for the Tigers.
  • LB Jeffrey Holland: After taking a late visit to Ole Miss last week, there are some concerns about the possibility of the Tigers falling behind for Jeffrey Holland, the four-star linebacker from Jacksonville. However, we project he will sign with Auburn next week. UPDATE: There was talk that Holland would arrive in Auburn for an unofficial visit with his teammate Kendrick Norton. Apparently that did not happen. Friday night, Holland tweeted out “Hotty Toddy,” “War Eagle” and “Gator Nation” in three separate tweets. Take that how you wish. UPDATE 2: Apparently the previous update was pre-mature. AuburnSports.com reported ($) Saturday morning that Holland has travelled to the Plains for another unofficial visit.
  • Deon Mcloud and Ray Ray McDonald: A pair of five-star Clemson commits, Mcloud and Cain made unexpected official visits to Auburn over the weekend according to reports from AuburnUndercover and AuburnSports.com. Very intriguing, but with little to no buzz surrounding interest in AU recently, it would be an absolute shock if either signed with Auburn.
  • LSU

    • DE CeCe Jefferson: One of Auburn’s biggest targets is five-star defensive end CeCe Jefferson, a Florida native that is also considering the Gators and Ole Miss. There have been rumors about Jefferson being part of a package deal with other Tigers’ targets Byron Cowart and Jeffrey Holland, but that is looking less and less likely the closer we get to Signing Day. Ole Miss is considered to be the leader for Jefferson currently.

    Miami

Jul 9, 2014; Beaverton, OR, USA; Alpha Pro athlete Torrance Gibson (6) heads to the line of scrimmage during Nike Football

    • QB Torrance Gibson: Ohio State commit Torrance Gibson will make his fourth and final official visit this weekend to Coarl Gables, Florida. The Hurricanes are a long shot to flip Gibson, and Auburn is considered to be the biggest threat to the Buckeyes. A flip is certainly possible because of the crowded quarterback situation at Ohio State, which is expected to return three starting QB candidates from last season’s national title team.

    Missouri

    • DT Terry Beckner, Jr.: A long shot to sign with Auburn, five-star defensive tackle Terry Beckner, Jr. will be in Columbia, Missouri this weekend for an official visit. Many recruiting analysts believe Mizzou to be the favorite for the East St. Louis prospect, but Ohio State and Florida State are also still in the mix.

    Indiana

    • WR Camion Patrick: A bit of a surprise when he visited Auburn last week, junior college Camion Patrick is planning to visit Indiana this weekend. Patrick is an intriguing prospect at 6-foot-2 and 215 pounds, and would be a nice addition to the 2015 Auburn recruiting class. He is also considering Louisville.

    Florida

    • G.G. Robinson: The son of Auburn great Gerald Robinson, Louisville commit and three-star defensive tackle G.G. Robinson received late interest from the Tigers. Unfortunately, it may have been too late. Robinson appears to be a lock to sign with the Cardinals, but will be in Gainesville this weekend anyway.

    Georgia

    • Javarius Davis: Another defensive back from Florida, Javarius Davis visited Auburn two weeks ago and was in Louisville last week. Davis is expected to be in Athens, Georgia this weekend. Florida is also in the mix.

    Other Top Targets:

  • DE Byron Cowart: A five-star defensive end from Florida, Cowart had previously planned to take a visit to Florida State this weekend, but recently cancelled. He is expected to choose either Auburn or Florida on National Signing Day.
  • OL Martez Ivey:

Apopka, Florida native Martez Ivey has completed his official visits, and even made unofficial visits to Auburn and Florida over the past two weeks. The Gators are widely considered to have a  slight edge to land the nation’s top rated offensive line prospect.

  • WR Terry Godwin: A Georgia commit, Auburn is believed to be the top competition to flip the five-star wide receiver following his January 16 visit to the Plains, though Godwin also recently visited Alabama. Godwin’s official visits have been completed.
  • WR Ryan Davis: Currently, it appears that Florida native and Auburn target Ryan Davis will be staying home this weekend, though he may decide to make an unofficial visit somewhere. We expect him to sign with Auburn, but the odds are roughly 50-50 and the home state Gators have some momentum.
  • CB Carlton Davis: A four-star defensive back from Miami, Davis de-committed from Ohio State this week following an official visit to Auburn last weekend. The Tigers are now believed to be the favorite to land the 6-foot-2, 184-pounder.
  • WR Darius Slayton: A surprise visitor to the Plains last weekend, it would be a shock for Darius Slayton to sign with the Tigers over Georgia. However, there are signs that Auburn picked up a lot of steam after Slayton’s visit, and the 6-foot-1, 182-pound wideout is expected to stay home this weekend instead of visiting Athens.
  • As always, this is a fluid list and is subject to change. We will update this page if and when recruits make last minute decisions on visits, commitments, or as other information becomes available.

This time next week, the 2015 Auburn recruiting class will be official and we will know where all these recruits have landed. Between now and February 4, there is sure to be a lot of news, updates and developments in relation to these players and more.
