Robinson originally signed with Auburn in 2012, but academic issues forced him to take the junior college route. At Georgia Military College in 2013, Robinson earned NJCAA Player of the Year honors with 2,387 rushing yards and 34 touchdowns. Injuries slowed the Memphis native in 2014, but he had 811 rushing yards and nine touchdowns as a sophomore.
Once Robinson’s academic benchmarks were met at GMC, he was allowed to enroll at Auburn and participate in Outback Bowl practices. Much bigger than he was as a true freshman on campus for a short time in 2012, Robinson impressed.
“I’ll tell you what — on his first carry, I thought it was (true freshman H-back/running back Kamryn) Pettway, just because I wasn’t focused enough watching. But after someone acknowledged that it was Jovon, I was kind of surprised how big his stature was,” senior Gabe Wright said in December. “He’s a bigger back compared to our backs we already have.”
He will also go through spring practice.
Robinson has two seasons of eligibility remaining and will compete for the starting running back position with rising sophomore Roc Thomas and incoming freshman Kerryon Johnson.
