Since committing in the summer of 2014, Johnson was the only high school defensive lineman that pledged to play for the Tigers until National Signing Day. With four seniors graduated from the 2014 depth chart, that was less than ideal for the new defensive coaching staff.
And because of that lack of depth, defensive coordinator Will Muschamp and D-Line coach Rodney Garner may call upon the 6-foot-2, 330-pound Johnson earlier than they would like. He certainly has the size to contribute at nose guard, but it’s far too early to tell whether or not he’s physically ready to play.
Johnson has raw strength and was able to survive and thrive in high school because of it. However, based on his high school highlights, Johnson must improve his technique at the collegiate level or he’ll get pushed around, no matter how much he weighs.
In an ideal world, the Lincoln, Alabama native will redshirt to give him an extra year to develop. But the depth chart isn’t ideal right now.
