In 2014, with only a few exceptions, redshirt Daniel Carlson handled all the kicking duties for the Auburn Tigers. Carlson kicked field goals and extra points, punted, and kicked off, which raised concern that his kicking leg might become fatigued. There was enough concern to bring in a scholarship specialist.

A Georgia native, Ian Shannon is one of the highest rated specialists in the nation. He is ranked fourth overall among punters in the 247Sports Composite and ESPN ranked him in the nation’s top five kicking prospects. There were early indications he would gray shirt and his scholarship wouldn’t count in the 2015 Auburn recruiting class numbers, but those plans recently changed.
“Coach (Gus) Malzahn told me I won’t be grayshirting anymore and I’ll be reporting in late May,” Shannon said after a campus visit in January. “It’s fantastic. I’m excited and ready. There were benefits either way, but this is definitely what I wanted to do.”
Shannon’s key asset is a strong leg, which he displayed often by drilling kickoffs through the end zone throughout his high school career, and he’ll continue to develop his mechanics to increase accuracy.
Scholarship punters don’t often sit on the bench, so expect for Shannon to see the field in 2015.
