Braden Smith, 2014

First, a fond memory.

It wasn’t a complete shock that Braden Smith signed with Auburn one year ago, but he doesn’t fit the mold of the traditional future Tiger on National Signing Day.

A native of Olathe, Kansas, Smith was also considering Texas A&M and TCU with the Horned Frogs getting the last official visit before the big day. But Auburn head coach Gus Malzahn was able to enter the picture late – with a little help from Greg Robinson – to convince the 6-foot-6, 299-pound offensive lineman to travel one of the longest distances of any recruit in last year’s Auburn class.

“The reason I chose Auburn was the great opportunity there,” Smith said. “Now that Greg Robinson left for the NFL, it provides a great opportunity for me to come in and get better, get a chance to play early.”

Smith impressed coaches and players with his strength and earned several nicknames in fall camp including “Hulk” and “Drago” for his physique.

As a true freshman, Smith saw increased playing time over the course of the season, playing tight end some in short-yardage situations during the middle of the season and making his first career start at tackle in the Outback Bowl.

He’ll face some stiff competition next season with three returning starters plus Ole Miss transfer Austin Golson and 2013 Freshman All-American Alex Kozan, both of which were unable to play last season, but Braden Smith will be in the mix for a spot in the starting lineup in 2015.
