2016 Auburn Baseball Preview
Recap of last season
The Tigers were 23-9 in out-of-conference games last season, but they struggled during SEC play with a record of 13-17; however, that was good enough to make them the no. 9 seed heading into the SEC Baseball Tournament.
In the first round they beat no. 8 seeded Kentucky 6-3 before losing a tough one-run game to the top seeded LSU Tigers. Their tournament run ended with an 11-2 loss to Florida.
They made it to the NCAA Regionals for the first time since 2010 and were the no. 3 seed in the Tallahassee Regional. Auburn lost a heart-breaker 7-6 in 11 innings to open up the regionals against the College of Charleston. They stayed alive by beating Mercer in their next game 1-0, but then they lost another one-run game to Charleston that ended their season.
The Tigers won the Capital City Classic 5-3 over Alabama last year giving them their sixth win in the seven years that two teams have met up in Montgomery for the annual event.
Auburn baseball had two players taken in the 2015 MLB Draft in pitchers Rocky McCord and Trey Wingenter. Wingenter went in the 17th round to the San Diego Padres after making 21 appearances and six starts with the Tigers last year. McCord went in the 26th round to the Baltimore Orioles after starting 17 games for Auburn in 2015 with a 6-4 record and 3.81 ERA over 89.2 innings.
Pitcher Cole Lipscomb was named to the All-SEC second team after going 8-2 with a 2.53 ERA and striking out 91 batters in 92.2 innings for the Tigers in 2015.
