Auburn football rumors: Gunner Stockton could commit to Tigers
Auburn football may be getting a major pickup in the form of 2022 quarterback Gunner Stockton, who has decommitted from the University of South Carolina.
If you look at things on the surface, Auburn football is going through an extremely rough patch as a program. Their arch-rival, the Alabama Crimson Tide, just won the College Football Playoff National Championship with ease against an Ohio State team that looked the part of an equal beforehand and the Tigers got blown out by a B1G 10 opponent on New Year’s Day in the Citrus Bowl.
Nick Saban has established his legendary status as perhaps the greatest head coach in the history of the sport, while Gus Malzahn was fired in disgrace after his top assistant Kevin Steele–who has agreed to join Jeremy Pruitt’s staff in Rocky Top, Tennessee–staged a coup to overtake him as the team’s lead locker-room voice.
But, Auburn football fans, take a step back, and you’ll realize things are improving…and the fruits of new head coach Bryan Harsin’s labor are starting to blossom.
Currently sporting the #48-ranked recruiting class in 2021, the Tigers appear to be in the running for one of the top quarterback recruits in 2022 according to a friend of Fly War Eagle, Jake “JBoy” Crain:
There appears to be smoke Tuesday (I so meant to do that) in relation to a Stockton-to-Auburn fire. The Tigers appear to be shifting their attention to the position with Dematrius Davis making his way to the Plains next season to give Bo Nix competition at the signal-caller spot.
Scott could eventually compete with double-D for reps, but Stockton–by way of being a five-star recruit–would eventually have the keys to the offense.
This would be a huge get for Auburn football, and the Mike Bobo connection to South Carolina cannot be overstated. Harsin’s offensive coordinator hire could directly lead to a program-changing quarterback ending up under center in 2022 and beyond.
