Two recently fired Auburn football coaches are in the running to be the next head coach at the University of Tennessee. What are Gus Malzahn’s and Kevin Steele’s odds to be Vols HC?

Now–after the Auburn football program parted ways with their head coach and defensive coordinator–the Tennessee Volunteers appear to be looking at the Plains’ coaching scraps in their search for a new head coach after dismissing Jeremy Pruitt on Tuesday.

Gus Malzahn, who was fired after an attempted coup by his underling was pushed for (and ultimately pushed back on), and Kevin Steele, the man who staged said attempted coup, are among the options to take the helm of the voice of the locker-room on Rocky Top in 2021:

The top options all appear to emanate from non-Power 5 conferences, with the Sunbelt claiming the top two spots.

Bill Napier, the head coach of the Ragin’ Cajuns of the University of Louisiana at Lafayette, and Jamey Chadwell, the head coach at Coastal Carolina, are the likeliest choices according to BetOnline.ag’s odds. Napier was seen as the frontrunner for the Auburn football head coaching job once upon a time, but he ultimately passed that up. It would be an offbeat choice to pass up the Tigers job but go for the Volunteers HC role.

Kevin Steele, the current interim head coach, is the eighth likeliest choice, while Gus Malzahn is the 11th likeliest choice. The odds drop off severely after that with Peyton Manning, a seemingly random option who has yet to declare his interest in coaching himself, despite apparently having input on who the next coach will be.

Fly War Eagle will continue to monitor the Tennessee head coaching situation.
