Chris Doering sees Gus Malzahn as ideal Vols HC
SEC radio analyst Chris Doering agrees with Fly War Eagle and Auburn football fans alike–Gus Malzahn could be the perfect fit for the Tennessee football program.
Chris Doering, former wide receiver for the Florida Gators, took to his SiriusXM radio show SEC this Morning to explain how Gus Malzahn should be the next HC in Knoxville.
Doering stressed that Tennessee’s greatest need is to hire someone different than what they had, and that means someone who has proven himself in the SEC and can hold their own against the SEC-elites–namely Alabama, Florida, and Georgia–and occasionally steal a game. Since 2013, the SEC championship has included at least one of those teams, meaning the next coach needs to be able to march into a matchup with confidence that he can outduel the man on the opposing sideline.
Gus Malzahn checks all of those boxes.
Doering claims that Malzahn’s accomplishments are under-appreciated, and that’s probably true. But everyone knows that SEC football is cutthroat, and sometimes “good” isn’t good enough. And while maybe Gus wasn’t good enough for Auburn football anymore, it doesn’t mean he won’t be a valued asset to another program.
With major NCAA trouble on the horizon for the Volunteers’ football program, Malzahn could be exactly what the program needs. He empowers athletes and makes them want to play for him, and he had a winning record all six years at Auburn.
Gus has shown he can compete against Nick Saban, and while he may not win Tennessee national titles any time soon, he can definitely revamp their program and elevate the team from its near-rock bottom position on the SEC totem pole.
War eagle, and here’s hoping that Tennessee hits that home run with their head coaching search.
