It happens every year. Auburn football’s spring game rolls around and all of a sudden we’re practically drowning in offseason optimism and somehow everyone seems convinced the Tigers are going to the National Championship. It’s fun to think that way, and everyone wants to think that way, but the truth is that A-Day is what it is–just a spring scrimmage.
However, this year’s spring game was more special than in years past for several reasons. For one, there was no spring game last year thanks to the Coronavirus, so the fact that college football’s spring schedule is on track this year makes us very thankful. It’s also the first time we’re really seeing Bryan Harsin’s Tigers in any sort of formal way. Of course, there was the open practice a few weeks ago, but scrimmage and practice are two different things.
And finally, this year’s A-Day was a day to celebrate because Auburn football Twitter came out in full force with one message to the world: “This is the year. Bo Nix has improved so much under this new offense. He’s focused. He’s having fun. I wouldn’t be surprised if he’s a dark horse for the Heisman.”
It all started with with Twitter use Trey Bruce, responding to Nathan King’s account of a Bo Nix completion to TE Tyler Fromm:
That was followed by another Twitter account (@IAMBARNINGHARD) instructing everyone to reply to all Auburn accounts with the quote and suddenly everyone in the Auburn Twitterverse had a timeline completely filled with claims that Bo Nix will be in the running for the Heisman this year.
Auburn football fans, writers, and even fans of other teams all got in on it, spreading the quote around Twitter like wildfire. Any question or statement relating to A-Day was simply answered with The Quote.
Regardless of whether or not Auburn football will actually be making an appearance in the College Football Playoffs, if there’s one thing you take away from the first spring game in the Bryan Harsin era, it’s that this is the year. Bo Nix has improved so much under this new offense. He’s focused. He’s having fun. I wouldn’t be surprised if he’s a dark horse for the Heisman.
