Auburn football head coach Bryan Harsin is getting down to business when it comes to the recruiting class of 2023. Already, the Harsinal has offered the No. 1 offensive guard in his class, Alex Birchmeier.
The Ashburn, VA native is a 5-star prospect according to 247Sports, and he checks in at 6-foot-5 and 275 pounds. Birchmeier has received upwards of 20 offers including some major Power 5 schools Penn State, Notre Dame, Ohio State, and Oklahoma. Around the SEC, the Auburn football team will compete for Birchmeier with Georgia, South Carolina, LSU, Vanderbilt, and Arkansas.
A duel athlete, Birchmeier also wrestles for Broad Run High School, and his scouting report from 247Sports describes him as someone with major potential to grow his already great skillset:
"Frame length to be an offensive tackle in college but can also be dominant guard. Excels as wrestler. Athletic, physical, punishing run blocker. Feisty and flexible. Plays with attitude. Quick feet and very good at pulling. Can sink hips and win leverage. Strong initial punch. As frame matures and strength is added, could be devastating player on high school level. Expected lower body development will aid in drive blocking. Will continue to develop pass pro skills. Starter at elite level Power 5 school."
Birchmeier tweeted his offer out on April 30, and of course, class of 2022 quarterback commit Holden Geriner was encouraging him to join the Auburn Tigers on the Plains. So far, he’s being recruited hard by the Penn State Nittany Lions and has already made a visit to the campus. He’s also got connections at Vandy through his cousin, defensive tackle Drew Birchmeier.
The No. 1 offensive guard in the recruiting class of 2023 would be a major get for Bryan Harsin and the Tigers, and with campus visits becoming a reality once more Auburn should have a great chance at getting the OG.
