Bruce Pearl’s Auburn basketball program has had quite the number of transfer commits in the off-season, and rumor has it they’re about to pick up one more. UGA guard K.D. Johnson entered the transfer portal last week, becoming the ninth Bulldog to abandon ship in the basketball program, and is expected to continue his career on the Plains.
Johnson was the second-leading scorer for the bulldogs at 13.5 points per game despite missing 10 games early on in the season due to NCAA eligibility issues, according to AJC.com. In his 16 games as a Bulldog, Johnson never earned a start but averaged 2.8 rebounds, 1.8 steals, and 1.2 assists.
If Johnson were to join the Tigers, he would be the second transfer from within the SEC to shed their colors for orange and blue. Guard Desi Sills from Arkansas also joined the Auburn basketball roster for the coming season and signed with the Tigers two weeks ago.
The JBoy Show predicted earlier this week that K.D. Johnson would choose Auburn with 75% confidence:
Out of high school, Johnson was ranked as the No. 20 point guard in the recruiting class of 2020, and the No. 6 recruit out of the state of Virginia. He eventually committed to the Bulldogs although the Tigers were recruiting him hard.
After originally saying that he would commit on Monday, May 17, Johnson pushed back his announcement to Wednesday, May 19. If Johnson were to commit to Auburn, he would be the twelfth player to join the roster and the last of the new additions to the 2021 team.
Still in question for the Tigers are the return of J.T. Thor and the destination of Scoot Henderson, the 5-star who is expected to commit on Friday, May 21. Henderson has been recruited by Bruce Pearl for years, but it’s looking like he’s going to choose the G-League and forgo the college experience.
Johnson’s announcement could come at any time on Wednesday, and it’s looking like another SEC opponent will become an Auburn teammate.
