Auburn football may not have any new commitments yet, but that could be changing very soon due to the Tigers finding themselves in contention for multiple top prospects. Travis Williams laid the blueprint for linebacker recruiting on the Plains and now Jeff Schmedding looks to be picking up right where Williams left off.
EJ Lightsey is a 3-star linebacker out of Georgia and currently ranks as the #447 overall player in the 2022 recruiting class and the #44 linebacker in the class. Lightsey was an All-Region 1st Team selection in the state of Georgia last season and holds over 20+ offers according to 247Sports.
Lightsey announced his Top-6 teams on Twitter this afternoon and the Tigers look to be right in the mix for the talented linebacker out of Fitzgerald, GA.
The Tigers will have to fight off Florida, Georgia, LSU, Georgia Tech, and Florida State for Lightsey; but look to be sitting in a good place in his recruitment thus far. He was on the Plains last week and had this to say about Auburn, official visits, and new linebackers coach Jeff Schmedding:
"“I’ve talked to them (Auburn) like four or five times. The last time was like three days ago. At first, they went a little while without talking, but now it’s kind of picking up. I really like Auburn, it’s one of my top schools.”“He (Schmedding) just talks about how I fit well there and well in their scheme. We have talked about one (Official Visit) but haven’t set one up. If they want to set one up, I’m pretty sure they’ll get one.”"
Lightsey has not announced if or when he will officially visit Auburn, but that should be on the horizon after Auburn football made his top-6 teams. He has already scheduled his official with Florida State (September 5th) and taken an official to Georgia Tech (June 18th), while Florida (June 1st) and Auburn (June 3rd) have received unofficial visits.
Lightsey is a huge target for Derek Mason and Jeff Schmedding, so this will be a recruitment to follow going into the fall. The Tigers are sitting nicely to land one of the best linebackers in the 2022 class.
