Auburn football experienced a mass exodus of talent after the 2020 season at the wide receiver position and it left the positional group extremely thin and very inexperienced. Seth Williams, Anthony Schwartz, and Eli Stove all headed to the next level after last season. This left Auburn football without a true #1 wide receiver and no wide receiver on the roster with significant playing experience for the Tigers.

This all changed today as Demetris Robertson committed to the Tigers as a 6th year senior with an abundance of experience throughout the SEC and Power-5. Robertson announced his transfer on Twitter and kept the streak of Auburn football commitments going at three straight days.

Robertson was a 5-star prospect and the #1 wide receiver in the 2016 recruiting cycle and originally committed to Cal. He racked up over 50 catches for 700 yards and 7 TDs in his first year before injuries derailed his 2017 season and Robertson transferred to Georgia for the 2018 season. Robertson never was given the chance to be the #1 wide receiver at Georgia and had a combined 42 catches for 443 yards and 3 touchdowns in his three years in Athens.

With Robertson now headed to the Plains, it begs the question about how will be fit into the offense and where will he fall on the depth chart for the Tigers. Robertson will absolutely be the #1 or #2 wide receiver for the Tigers when they take the field September 4th against Akron in Jordan-Hare Stadium.

The wide receivers currently on the Auburn roster have combined for only 23 catches and 300 yards in their careers. Robertson is going to immediately be one of the most talented players that Auburn has in the wide receiver room and brings a skillset that Auburn football lacks right now, in which he can make a play after the catch with his legs.

I think Robertson can also be a versatile threat, in which he can be utilized on jet sweeps, screens, and he also has the speed to be the deep threat Auburn currently lacks. Elijah Canion and Ze’Vian Capers will still earn their roles, but now Robertson takes the pressure off of these young players and allows them to grow into their new starting roles.

The Auburn Tigers took a huge step forward today and this offense will benefit from this pickup from the first snap of the 2021 season. Bryan Harsin and this new Auburn football staff are showing what they are capable of and they are building something special down on the Plains, so stay tuned right here at Fly War Eagle!
