While Auburn football fans are mostly focused on the upcoming season–the one that begins in less than a month–but for first-year head coach Bryan Harsin and his coaching staff, recruiting on all levels never ends.
The Tigers have become the next program to offer a scholarship to talented 4-star quarterback Avery Johnson. From Maize, KS, Johnson is the #2 recruit out of the state of Kansas and the #9 quarterback in the recruiting class of 2023. Johnson already has offers from 16 teams, including 4 from the SEC.
While the Tigers have already sent out class of 2023 offers to over 100 prospects, they have no solid commitments yet. So far, Auburn football has offered 11 quarterbacks in the 2023 recruiting cycle, three of whom have already committed to different schools.
Johnson is a dual-sport athlete who excels at basketball in addition to football. In the 2020 football season, Johnson completed 117 of 207 pass attempts and racked up 2,109 passing yards for 25 touchdowns. He also managed to record 10 rushing touchdowns.
Gabe Brooks, a 247Sports Midlands Region Recruiting Analyst, compared Johnson to Haynes King from Texas A&M and described the potential in the young athlete:
"Good improvisational playmaker. Senses pressure and escapes with eyes downfield. Capable of altering arm angles on the fly as needed. Throws with a smooth, repeatable stroke that fosters a “catchable” ball. Generally stays on top of the ball. Accuracy and consistency can improve as evidenced by 56 completion percentage as a sophomore. Needs to build velocity and vertical strength, which should come with added mass. Raw in some ways but a very athletic playmaker at the QB spot who looks like he possesses ample developmental potential. Projects to the high-major level and could eventually become a difference-making impact player."
While it’s too soon to tell which schools are catching Avery Johnson’s interest yet, keep an eye out for the 2023 QB in the coming months.
