One of Auburn football’s most troubling position groups this season has been the wide receivers. The group has struggled to consistently get things right, their performances plagued by drops and confusion even after a leadership change that saw Eric Kiesau step up to replace Cornelius Williams.
Fortunately for the Tigers, the receivers stepped up big-time in Auburn’s victory over the #17 Arkansas Razorbacks. Seven different receivers had at least one catch in the game, including Shedrick Jackson’s five catches for 61 yards and Demetris Robertson’s two receptions for 81 yards.
Finally, third-year quarterback Bo Nix seemed to click with the wide receivers and racked up 292 yards through the air in last weekend’s victory. The next move for Auburn football’s receivers? Consistency. Nix needs to be able to find his go-to guys during every game, and that may mean adding new talent to the mix.
One possibility lies in Syracuse WR transfer Taj Harris, who has been a three-year starter for the Orange since committing in 2017. Throughout his career at Syracuse, Harris has racked up 151 catches for 2,028 yards and 10 touchdowns but decided to enter the transfer portal after the Orange offense became more run-oriented this season, per Inside the Rebels.
Since hitting the transfer portal, Harris has received offers from multiple schools including Mississippi State, NC State, Louisville, Temple, Texas A&M, Western Kentucky, Utah, and Kentucky in addition to Ole Miss and Auburn.
Right now, the top team to beat for Taj Harris is Auburn football’s next opponent, the Ole Miss Rebels. Harris confirmed to 247Sports that he will be visiting Oxford this weekend to watch Ole Miss take on the LSU Tigers. However, with the Auburn offer now on the table, Bryan Harsin and the Tigers have the opportunity to make a big push for Harris with a strong showing versus the Rebels in Jordan-Hare Stadium.
While Harris currently has no timeline for a decision, it’s critical that Harsin and his staff go after the talented receiver that could make a big impact on the Tigers’ offense.
