Auburn football has won its way into serious College Football Playoff conversations.

Being that their only two losses were to teams in the top 10 of the AP poll at the time, the Tigers still have an outside shot–dare I say making them a dark horse candidate–to make the 2021 CFP.

Defeating Texas A&M would be the key step for Auburn football making the CFP

The Aggies are the last remaining team separating Auburn and Alabama as the top teams in the SEC West in the minds of many. They lost a neutral site game in AT&T Stadium to Arkansas and then were edged out by Mississippi State at home, but being the lone blemish on ‘Bama’s record has empowered voters to rank them highly each week.

AU has slipped past them in the AP Top 25, but being up one spot in the rankings didn’t stop Vegas from making the Tigers a one-touchdown underdog for their afternoon SEC affair this coming Saturday.

Knock off TAMU at Kyle Field, and all of a sudden there is a very legitimate conversation to be had about Auburn crashing the CFP party.

Obviously, one can’t look past Mississippi State, who just played spoiler this past weekend against then-#12 Kentucky, and South Carolina, who played spoiler to Auburn football’s 2020 season last season at Williams-Brice Stadium.

And of course, Bryan Harsin is going to have to keep up Gus Malzahn’s tradition of beating the team up north for there to be any chance of even going to Atlanta for the SEC Championship game against Georgia, barring something drastic and unforeseen in the SEC East.

But visions of a CFP have already begun after three massive wins (two as the betting underdog) to open up SEC West play.

If the Tigers beat beat the lone ‘Bama slayers so far, you better believe that conversation will be in full swing across the college football world in the weeks leading into the 2021 Iron Bowl.
