Week after week, and big win after big win, the critics won’t stay silent. Auburn football continues to be the underdog. Tigers fans are used to it.
But when is enough enough?
Across the board College GameDay picks against Auburn have aged so badly. Since the White Out game in Happy Valley, every pick they’ve chosen has been proven wrong.
We are looking at you Herbie.
It all started in week five when Auburn came to Baton Rogue. LSU was picked unanimously to win. We all know how that ended as Bo Nix took the game into his hands in the last quarter to beat LSU 24-19, ending a drought in Louisiana that no Auburn quarterback has been able to do over the span of two decades.
Then just when you think Auburn football should finally get some respect last week after another big road win in Arkansas, in come the picks and once again Auburn’s opponent is chosen.
When will they get tired of being wrong? When will the Tigers get some respect?
The Ole Miss Rebels swept the board again when they were selected by the College GameDay gang last week. Even when Auburn football has beaten them 5 straight times.
Despite one of the biggest offenses in the SEC they weren’t a match for Auburn. The Tigers went on to win with ease at home 31-20, beating the Ole Miss Rebels for the sixth straight time.
With that, GameDay goes down again 0-5.
It wasn’t the first time, and it surely won’t be the last. Auburn doesn’t need to prove it to anybody but themselves.
Linebacker Roger McCreary commented on the lack of respect Auburn achieves from the media:
"“I feel like everybody always looks down on us, saying Auburn’s not going to win.” Says McCreary. “We’re always the low guys, so I feel like that always hyped us up, like okay, it’s nothing new to us.”"
But at least there’s glimmers of hope.
Kirk Herbstreit quickly changed his tune after the Tigers knocked off the Rebels. Will he decide to look like a winner this week? Or choose defeat again and pick Texas A&M? We’ll see when the College GameDay crew gives their picks live from Cincinnati this Saturday.
Auburn may be a team that is under hyped by the media, but definitely not by their opponents. Time after time this season, Tigers opponents and AU alike have waged war as if they were playing in a bowl game.
Yet, there persists plenty of smack talk of saying Auburn is nothing but Alabama’s little brother and beating them is not impressive.
So which one is it? Auburn can’t be the underdog and powerhouse all at the same time. The narrative will be further sculpted when the Tigers play Texas A&M in another SEC West showdown at 2:30pm central during CBS’ SEC showcase game.
