Auburn football legend Cam Newton may have exhausted his final opportunity to be a consistent starter in the NFL.

Newton’s comeback with the Carolina Panthers reached a low point on Sunday when he was benched for backup P.J. Walker.

His performance was abhorrent, as he did collect over 200 all-purpose yards and collected a rushing touchdown in the process.

FanSided’s John Buhler was far from impressed, though, and feels as though the Panthers were better off without the 2010 Heisman winner from that year’s National Champion Tigers:

"Though his stat line may not have been atrocious, Newton clearly does not have it any more under center. His inconsistencies in the passing game and questionable decision-making held the Panthers back in this one. While head coach Matt Rhule will always back his Temple guy Walker, Carolina does not have a quarterback. This is why reaching into the past is always a horrible idea."

Is it time to let go of the past and admit that Newton doesn’t have anything left in the tank after another second straight game with multiple turnovers?

Hell no.

Auburn football legend Cam Newton is not done in the NFL

The Panthers gave Newton the opportunity to resurrect his status as a top guy in the pros, but the situation was far from ideal to do so. He was a midseason pickup that had to learn a new offense with a coach that wasn’t there the last time he was under center in the Queen City.

Newton must capitalize on a team this upcoming offseason that unexpectedly loses their QB early enough in the preseason to allow him to establish himself as the locker-room leader.

Or maybe he turns things around with the Panthers after getting another chance in 2021. Time will tell, and ‘Father Time’ is undefeated.

But greatness always finds a way. Let’s hope Newton still has enough of that left.
