The clock is ticking down for Auburn football to secure another transfer quarterback from the portal. The last day for students to enroll in classes at the university is January 19, meaning if a transfer portal QB wants to play at Auburn he’ll have to decide before then.
Of course, the Tigers secured Zach Calzada for the 2022 roster on January 6, the coaching staff did not slow down in terms of recruiting another quarterback from the portal to join Calzada, TJ Finley, Dee Davis, and Holden Geriner.
Though the clear priority for Auburn football over the last few weeks has been Oklahoma transfer Caleb Williams, Jeffrey Lee of Auburn Live reports that it’s not looking great for the Tigers. USC, the home of Williams’ former coach Lincoln Riley, is still looking like the favorite, and head coach Bryan Harsin and his staff have reportedly turned their attention to Oregon transfer and Alabama native Robby Ashford:
"Ashford had not heard from Auburn earlier this week, but things have changed. Auburn has reached out to the dual-sport athlete (he also plays baseball) and could bring him in for a visit this weekend."
Lee reports that Ashford intends to play both sports at his next school, but will focus on football for the first year as he has four years of eligibility left. Ashford plans to enroll for the spring semester, and the January 19 deadline is just around the corner.
Ashford joined the Oregon Ducks as a member of their 2020 recruiting class and was marked the #12 dual QB in the class of 2020 and the #12 recruit out of the state of Alabama.
With former Oregon defensive lineman Jayson Jones officially on the Tigers’ roster and a commitment likely on its way from former Oregon cornerback DJ James, Ashford has the potential to be the third former Duck to suit up in orange and blue next season.
