As the page turns on the 2021 Auburn football season, Dematrius Davis will be heading into his second year with the Tigers. After redshirting last season and seeing no game action, Davis will enter into a five-person competition to be Auburn’s QB1 in 2022.
While Davis would originally have been competing with LSU transfer TJ Finley and incoming freshman Holden Geriner, the tides of the transfer portal brought in two new quarterbacks to enter the race in former Texas A&M Aggie Zach Calzada and former Oregon Duck Robby Ashford.
With five quarterbacks on Auburn football’s roster heading into spring practice, newly-hired offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach Austin Davis will have his work cut out for him in selecting a new QB1, and it’s likely that once the dust settles the Tigers will see at least one of their quarterbacks hit the portal before the 2022 season begins.
Is it possible the next Auburn transfer QB is Dematrius Davis?
Despite the flurry of rumors surrounding the quarterback situation on the Plains right after the regular season and the departure of Bo Nix, Davis maintained that he would not be transferring away from Auburn, but it’s possible his position changes depending on the quarterback competition.
If Dee Davis goes two years on the Plains with no snaps, the young quarterback could become the next Robby Ashford–heading back to his home state for a chance to play ball. Ashford, a Hoover native, labeled his transfer to Auburn football as a homecoming after seeing no playing time at Oregon for two seasons. Could the same thing cause Dee Davis to look for a new program in his home state of Texas?
Although the tweets were deleted, Davis seemed to be venting some frustrations about something yesterday morning, prior to Ashford’s public commitment:
Davis had an outstanding high school career, and there’s no question about his talent. However, with five other quarterbacks to compete with, it’s possible that he looks to take his talents elsewhere in the future.
