Auburn football fans defend AU from Barrett Sallee’s “dumpster fire” tweet
So far, head coach Bryan Harsin’s time with Auburn football is not everything we could have hoped for. The Tigers finished up 2021 with their first losing record since 2012, and four of Harsin’s original staffers were gone by the end of his first season.
Now, after replacing offensive coordinator Mike Bobo with Austin Davis and replacing defensive coordinator Derek Mason with Jeff Schmedding in addition to bringing on a new linebackers coach in Christian Robinson, Bryan Harsin will have to go on a coaching search yet again. As of this morning, offensive coordinator Austin Davis officially resigned from the program after 43 days on the job and without having coached the Tigers at all.
Though some Auburn football fans may be struggling to put a positive spin on the latest news, many believe that CBS Sports Reporter Barrett Sallee took it too far with his comment:
How is it reasonable to expect a head coach to completely refresh a football program in just one season? While it isn’t the best look to lose so many staffers, there’s no doubt that Bryan Harsin deserves time to truly make the program his own.
For example, take a look at Auburn basketball coach Bruce Pearl. The Tigers finished in 13th place in the Southeastern Conference his first two seasons, 11th place in his third season, before skyrocketing to a first-place tie with Tennessee in the 2017-2018 season. It took several years before Pearl was able to get the basketball team where they needed to be, so why does everyone expect Bryan Harsin to do it immediately?
