Spring practices are right around the corner for Auburn football, and two key returning players from the 2021-2022 roster are raising the level of competition off the field.

While Bruce Pearl’s Auburn basketball team finished up their regular season with an outright SEC title on Saturday, the Auburn football Twitter account revealed the Iron Men of Week 7. As is tradition, each week the program recognizes one offensive player and one defensive player for their hard work in the weight room ahead of spring practices.

Last week, the honors went to senior edge linebacker Derick Hall and sophomore wide receiver Tar’Varish Dawson, two players that have the potential to make a big impact on the playing field during the 2022-2023 season. This week, junior defensive end Colby Wooden and senior tight end John Samuel Shenker are being recognized as the Iron Men of Week 7:

Along with last week’s Iron Man Derick Hall, Colby Wooden is expected to be a major leader for Auburn football’s defense heading into Bryan Harsin’s second year on the Plains. Entering his fourth season with the Tigers, Wooden will have to adjust to a new defensive coordinator in Jeff Schmedding and a new defensive line coach in Jimmy Brumbaugh.

Wooden finished up last season with 61 total tackles, 8.5 tackles for loss, five sacks, one fumble recovery, two pass breakups, and one blocked kick. He had the fourth-most tackles on the Auburn defense and led the team in quarterback hurries with seven.

Senior tight end John Samuel Shenker will be heading into his fifth year with Auburn football following a record-breaking season last year. He set the Tigers’ single-season records for tight end receptions with 33 and tight end receiving yards with 413. He had five receptions in four different games last season and was one of the most productive receivers for the team.

Both players will be valuable assets for Bryan Harsin’s second-year team this fall.
