The Auburn football QB battle’s loss could be…UCF’s current QB battle’s gain?

Auburn Daily’s Trey Lee proposed joining the Knights in Orlando as a potential transfer portal destination for the recently departed signal-caller Dematrius Davis.

Davis never saw the field for Auburn football despite calls for him to during the buildup to this past December’s Birmingham Bowl. And afterward as well. There were no snaps to be had for Davis in the razor-thin loss to Houston, and there was no winning season to be had in Bryan Harsin’s first year in charge.

Now, there’s no Davis at all on the Plains under Harsin, who didn’t recruit the Texas high school football great to begin with.

According to Lee, the man that did, Gus Malzahn, could be in the mix for him. That said, as he recognizes, it’d most likely not work because of the current QB situation:

"Gus Malzhan originally recruited Davis out of high school, so it would only be fitting if the two joined forces in Orlando. This pairing may not go down simply based on UCF’s depth chart at quarterback. Sophomore Mikey Keene is the likely starter for the Knights, with former Auburn quarterback Joey Gatewood and former Ole Miss quarterback and receiver John Rhys Plumlee waiting in the wings."

Former Auburn football QB Dematrius Davis must find an obvious opening

Of the schools listed for Dematrius Davis by Trey Lee, none offer an actual immediate chance to start.

It could take a fairly large step down in conference prestige for Davis to find that opportunity, though. An obvious chance to contribute right away could be with Incarnate Word of San Antonio in his native Lone Star State. The Cardinals just lost starter Cameron Ward to Washington State in the transfer portal this season.

Don’t expect, though, for Gus Malzahn to bring in his second former AU QB to the UCF football program in as many offseasons.
